Active Investor Plus Visa

Give with purpose, invest in New Zealand's future

From 1 June 2026, investors in the Active Investor Plus (AIP) visa Growth category can direct part of their qualifying investment to New Zealand charitable causes.

For anyone considering this option, Community Foundations can help you to give well into New Zealand communities.

What's changed

The AIP visa is New Zealand's investor residence pathway. The Growth category requires a minimum investment of NZ$5 million. Until now, philanthropy was only an option in the Balanced category and the new settings extend it to Growth, alongside active investment in managed funds and direct investments.

Community Foundations across Aotearoa, each rooted in its own region.

Why give through a local Community Foundation?

Community Foundations are local, independent, not-for-profit charities governed by volunteer local boards. Gifts can be invested and grown, and the income supports local causes year after year, which is an ongoing way to give back to the country and a fulfilling way to contribute to ‘New Zealand Inc’.

Local knowledge. We know which organisations are doing great work in our region, we understand local aspirations and where the need is greatest.

Lasting impact. Endowment funds are invested so, if you choose, your gift can keep giving back to New Zealand for generations.

Your choice of cause. Support a region, a general community fund, or a named fund focused on the issues you that are of interest to you, such as environment, education, kaupapa Māori, health, arts or youth.

Transparent reporting. Fund holders receive regular reports on earnings and distributions.

Professional stewardship. Due diligence, governance and grant-making are handled by the local Community Foundation, embedded in their local community.

Ways to give

You can choose to give to an existing fund or direct your investment to a named fund.

Give to an existing fund

Contribute to a fund already working in an area you care about, or to a regional community fund.

Set up a named fund

Larger gifts can create your own named fund, where you choose the name and the cause areas to support.

Eligibility: what Immigration New Zealand requires

Philanthropic gifts must go to a charity that meets Immigration New Zealand's criteria. Based on published settings, the recipient charity must:

  • be a registered charity with at least five years of compliant annual financial returns;
  • hold current donee organisation status with Inland Revenue;
  • be a Tier 1 to 3 reporting charity;
  • use the gift in New Zealand, and the gift must not personally benefit the applicant.
  • Applicants must also declare any existing links to the charity, as conflicts of interest are likely to lead to a decline.

The remainder of the investment must be in acceptable Growth investments. Balanced category applicants can continue to give any portion to philanthropy, provided the same charity requirements are met.

Important: You are responsible for meeting INZ requirements and providing evidence of your investment. Please take advice from a licensed immigration adviser or lawyer before making a philanthropic gift.

How it works

  1. Talk to us. Tell us about your interests and the region or causes that are of interest to you.
  2. Choose your foundation and fund. We'll connect you with the regional Community Foundation that meets Immigration New Zealand’s criteria.
  3. Make your gift. The gift should be timed with advice from your immigration advisor, normally after approval in principle.
  4. Get your documentation. You receive a receipt and confirmation to support your visa application.
  5. See the impact. Receive reports over time as grants are made into the community.
